The Internet of Things is here, and it’s dressed like a ninja! Ninja Blocks is a mini-computer hub and set of sensors that allow you to connect the Internet to your everyday devices. In a black, sculpted enclosure (with controllable RGB LED-backlit ninja eyes!) slightly larger than a bar of soap, the Ninja Block connects things in and outside of your home to the Internet without requiring you to write a single line of code. Out of the box, anyone can use the Ninja Block and Ninja sensors to start communicating with everyday things around your home. Simply plug in the Ninja Block, connect to the Internet, and log into the cloud-based dashboard to pair and configure all of your Ninja sensors and actuators. Use the Ninja Rule Engine to build simple “if this, then that” rules that trigger actions based on input from the hardware sensors included in the kit (motion detection, window & door open, temperature & humidity, and doorbell) or from web-based events using Web Hooks (Zapier or Webscript.io). Then, using cloud-based output capabilities (Facebook, Twitter, Email, Google Drive, Dropbox, Twilio, Webhooks), build rules to send a text or tweet when someone rings the doorbell, or receive an e-mail when your kids arrive home from school. The Ninja Rule Engine can also be used to write more advanced rules. Attach an RF Power Socket to your porch lights and write a rule that turns them on if you’re not home by 7pm, or automatically power on the humidifier in your living room if the humidity reading drops below 40%. The Ninja dashboard is web-based and can be used from any smartphone, tablet, or internet-enabled computer. It’s as simple as clicking a few buttons, with no coding required. To get you started, the Ninja Blocks kit comes with several sensors in the box (push button contact sensor, door/window sensor, temperature/humidity sensor, and a motion sensor). As a Grand St. special, we are including a pack of three RF Power Sockets (for US outlets only) and remote that allow you to turn on/off any device hooked up to a power outlet. If you’d like to venture beyond RF sensors and actuators, you can directly interface to the Ninja Block via four external mini-USB ports that can be connected to the optional Ninja Breakout Kit. It all starts with a Ninja, glowing RGB LED-backlit ninja eyes, and a little purple tag that says “Hack Me”. These Ninjas don’t belong in the network closet. In recent years, there’s been a proliferation of 433MHz RF sensors and actuators mainly intended for use with ever-tempting, but incredibly expensive home automation systems.
